UCL research – Help improve mental health support for families and carers

We are sharing an important opportunity for you to contribute to a new study that aims to improve mental health services. Researchers at University College London are currently exploring the experiences of family members, friends and carers when someone close to them is assessed or detained under the Mental Health Act.

Background to this research

People from minority ethnic and cultural backgrounds are often more likely to be detained under the Mental Health Act. Despite this, the perspectives of their families and carers are frequently missing from research and policy discussions. This study is especially keen to hear from carers within minority communities to ensure that their voices are heard and that services can better meet their specific needs.

By sharing your story, you can help researchers understand how to better support families during difficult times and inform fairer, more inclusive mental health policies.

Who is it for?

You are invited to take part if you meet the following criteria:

  • You are aged sixteen or over
  • You have supported someone who was assessed or detained under the Mental Health Act
  • Your support was provided as a family member, friend, nearest relative or carer

What is involved

The study involves a one to one interview which can be conducted online via Microsoft Teams or in person. The discussion will last approximately one hour and focuses on your personal experiences and the support you provided.

As a thank you for your time and contribution, participants will receive a thirty pound voucher.

How to participate

Your insights are invaluable for shaping the future of mental health care. If you are interested in taking part or would like more information, please contact the research team directly by emailing nrmha@ucl.ac.uk.
