The Richmond Charities is opening a second new block of 12 Almshouses in Richmond in Spring 2025. The Elizabeth Doughty Almshouses are on Queen’s Road, Richmond, TW10, comprising one 2-bed and 11 1-bed high quality accessible and adaptable dwellings, with one specifically designed for wheelchair users, to add to the charity’s existing 150 almshouses. These almshouses will be suitable for older people in need of level access accommodation.
The almshouses are for the elderly in our borough who are:
- in need of housing
- living on a limited income
- in need of level access accommodation
Almshouses are affordable homes that belong to a charity and are intended to provide accommodation for people who meet the charity’s eligibility criteria. Residents are not tenants but instead pay a weekly maintenance contribution. The Richmond Charities has been providing almshouse accommodation in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames for over 400 years.
The Richmond Charities is working closely with the Council’s allocations team to target over 65s on their Register and also working with social housing providers to identify those already housed but in housing no longer suitable for their increased mobility needs.
The Richmond Charities also want to spread the word more widely across the borough, in order to reach all those who might fit its criteria and be in housing need. The Richmond Charities need interested potential applicants to come forward soon as it does take time to get applicants through the application process.
