Advocacy Services–help to speak up for yourself

What are advocates?
• They can help you understand your rights and get services.
• They can talk to people on your behalf or help you to speak for yourself.
• If you would like to make a complaint, an advocate can help.

There are different types of advocates depending on what’s needed, and they can be particularly useful for people who may have limited ability to make their wishes known. Advocacy services are usually free of charge and are usually run by charities or private organisations.

The Rethink Mental Illness organisation has put together some useful information about advocacy.
