Young Carers in Schools Programme celebrates first school excellence awards

Richmond Carers Centre is proud to announce an important milestone in its Young Carers in Schools Programme, with the presentation of the first school excellence awards.

The awards recognise schools that have demonstrated consistent excellence in identifying and supporting young carers. This new initiative highlights the commitment of schools across the borough to ensuring that young carers are understood, valued and given the support they need to thrive.

The first four schools to receive this recognition are

  • Chase Bridge Primary School
  • Collis Primary School
  • St Edmund’s Catholic Primary School
  • Stanley Primary School

Each school has shown a strong and sustained commitment to supporting young carers within their communities.

Three of the schools attended the recent Young Carers in Schools forum, where they were formally presented with their awards. The presentation was made by Tom Halpin, a young carer registered with Richmond Carers Centre, making the occasion especially meaningful.

Launched in September 2022, the Young Carers in Schools Programme supports primary and secondary schools across the London Borough of Richmond to better identify and support young carers. Through tailored guidance, training and practical resources, schools are supported to build inclusive environments where young carers feel recognised and able to succeed both emotionally and academically.

Working in close partnership with schools, the programme offers flexible support shaped around each setting’s needs. This includes staff training, awareness raising for pupils, guidance for families and opportunities for professionals to share best practice. All support is provided free of charge to schools in the borough.

This achievement marks a significant step forward for the programme and reflects a great deal of dedication behind the scenes. The development of the award has been led with care and determination, alongside ongoing support to help schools reach this standard.

By recognising excellence in this way, Richmond Carers Centre aims to continue strengthening partnerships with schools and improving outcomes for young carers across the borough.
