Safeguarding adults at risk from abuse and neglect

Abuse happens when someone hurts you or treats you badly.

Abuse can happen once or over time. It can be accidental or deliberate. Abuse can take many forms, just because there is no injury it doesn’t mean there is no abuse.

Neglect is when someone who is meant to look after you does not take care of you properly.

Self-neglect is when you neglect your own health, hygiene and surroundings and you may need support.

An unpaid carer may also be an adult at risk with their own care and support needs.
