New Report Shines a Light on Carers’ Experiences in Richmond

Healthwatch Richmond has published the Carers Charter Engagement Report, a powerful new document that brings together the views of over 250 unpaid carers living in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. Developed in partnership with Richmond Carers Centre, the Council, South West London Integrated Care Board and other local organisations, the report explores what life is like for unpaid carers and highlights the changes they want to see.

Carers of all ages and backgrounds contributed to the report, describing challenges that included lack of recognition, financial strain, poor access to services and feeling invisible in society. Many described caring as a full-time role without proper support or understanding from professionals, employers or the wider public.

The report identifies five key areas for improvement:

  1. greater recognition of unpaid carers
  2. access to clear financial advice and support
  3. better availability of respite and wellbeing services
  4. improved signposting to local services
  5. more accessible spaces, services and transport

These findings will directly shape the forthcoming Richmond Carers and Young Carers Charter, a co-produced, one-page document that outlines shared priorities for action. Statutory and voluntary organisations will be invited to pledge their support for the Charter and work collaboratively to deliver meaningful change.

The report is an important reminder of the vital role unpaid carers play in our community. It provides a clear and compelling case for action, led by the voices of carers themselves.
